ASTHMA:
Asthma or reactive airway disease is a chronic disease in which the airways go into a spasm, and become narrow when allergens or irritating substance enter them. Many asthma attacks are caused by viral respiratory illnesses, or being exposed to things the child is allergic to. Emotional stress can also trigger an asthma attack.

Asthma attacks can be very frightening but they are manageable. When the child takes their medicine as directed, the symptoms are reversible. It is important for any child with asthma to always have their rescue inhaler (examples: Albuterol, Proventil) available. With the first sign of any wheezing or shortness of breath, the child should immediately start their rescue medications. If they are requiring their rescue medications for more than 4 hours, it is necessary for you to notify our office.

If your child is on controlling medications it is important for them to take these medications everyday. No matter what symptoms your child is having, this will help keep their asthma under control and decrease the amount and severity of their attacks.
