BEDWETTING:
Bedwetting (Enuresis) is a common childhood occurrence. Up until the age of 6 it is considered normal. If a child is 6 years or older and wets the bed, it is important for parents to realize the child has no control over the bedwetting. They are not doing it for attention or to get back at their parents. Most children are extremely embarrassed by this problem. Children should not be punished for wetting the bed. It is best for parents to take a matter-of-fact approach. Allow the child to take care of the situation as much as they are able. Allow the child to change the sheets, change their pajamas, and clean them self.

After age 6 it is important to notify your healthcare provider of the problem. Your Physician first rules out any physical problem. After that there are a number of treatment options.

Some children are started on a medication. This medication is given either orally or as a nasal spray. It is not a cure but for some children it does provide them an opportunity to participate in sleepovers, camps, etc. There are some drawbacks to the medications. It can be very expensive and also if it is used over a period of time, many children will have worsening enuresis when it is discontinued.

Bedwetting alarms can help a child achieve complete dryness. Basically, they are alarms that wake a child up with the first hint of any urine.
