BREATH HOLDING SPELLS:
Breath holding spells are a very scary occurrence to the family but are basically
harmless to the child. They are usually caused by upsetting events such as the
child being scared, frustrated mad, or injured. These spells are caused by an
abnormal reflex that allows some children the ability to hold their breath long
enough for them to pass out.
The progression is as follows:
The child gives 1-2 cries and then holds their breath until their lips become
bluish.
The child passes out. Some children may stiffen at his point and have a few
muscle twitches. This is NOT a seizure.
The child resumes normal breathing and is alert in less than one minute.
The onset of these attacks is between 6months and 2 years. They do not occur
when the child is sleeping. They can occur from 1-2 times a day to 1-2 times
per month. They are not dangerous and they do not lead to brain damage.
It is helpful to time the length of attack with a watch. The best
treatment during the attack is to keep the child safe from injuring them self
if they fall. It is unnecessary to call 911 or to start mouth to mouth.
Some children can be distracted from these breath-holding spells. Many times distracting them by having them look somewhere else or offering juice can help. With daily attacks, there is the possibility that the child could be helping to trigger the attacks. If this is happening, avoid giving into the child when these attacks happen.
