CIRCUMCISION
Circumcision is the removal of most of the male foreskin. Circumcision is done either for religious reasons or cosmetic reasons. There are no medical benefits to doing a circumcision. The decision for Circumcision is a decision best made by the family well before the arrival of the baby.

If your son is circumcised there are points to consider.
-In Rochester, the Obstetrician, rather than the Pediatrician perform circumcisions.
-Circumcisions are usually done on the second day of life, once it is clear that the baby is healthy.
-Many obstetricians use local anesthetic blocks, please check with you obstetrician if you would like more information.
-The tenderness of the circumcision is usually gone by the 3rd day.
-The area should be kept clean with warm water especially after stooling.
-A small amount of Vaseline or A&D ointment may be applied.
-The plastibel, a small plastic ring, usually falls off in 7-14 days.

If the area has any yellow drainage or bleeds more than a few drops, contact your provider.
