COLIC
Colic is a term used to describe babies that cry excessively despite being well
fed, burped, changed and comforted during the first 3 months of age. The bouts
of crying can last up to 2 hours at a time and many times will happen at the
same time every day (late afternoon/early evening tends to be the most difficult
hours). No one is certain what causes colic, but it tends to occur more in babies
with a sensitive temperament. Colic is not the result of bad parenting and no
research has shown any correlation between colic and gas.
This crying is harmless to your baby and will usually start to improve by 2 months with total resolution often by 3 months.
There are many ways to try to help you and your baby deal with this problem.
-Hold and comfort your baby whenever possible.
Some things that may help:
- Cuddling your child in a rocking chair
-Placing your child in a baby carrier or sling
-A swing or vibrating chair
-A stroller ride or a ride in the car
-As a last resort, allow your baby to cry herself to sleep. If your baby has
been crying after 30 minutes of comfort measures, wrap her snuggly and place
her in a crib. Let her try to get herself to sleep. If you can't stand to hear
her cry, go to another room, turn the radio on, or take a shower. If they are
still crying after 15 minutes, begin trying different comforting measures again.
Call upon family and friends to help with the baby. This allows the parents the opportunity for a much needed break. Remember, grandparents and friends can tolerate listening to the crying, as they have had a good nights sleep and can leave after a few hours.
