CONSTIPATION
Constipation is defined as the painful passage of stools. It can also be defined as the inability to pass a bowel movement (BM). Some children may feel the need to pass a BM but even after pushing for 10 minutes or more, are unable to pass the BM. Children who do not have a BM in 3 or more days may be considered constipated.

Infants are a different story. Many infants (> 2 months) will go 3-5 days without having a BM. Breastfed babies can go up to 7 days without having a BM and this can be considered normal. Breast milk is the perfect food and many times is fully absorbed by the body leaving nothing left for waste (BM). As long as the BM's stay soft, no treatment is necessary.

If your child is constipated, there are many things you can try at home before coming to see your provider:
For infants less than 1 year and greater than 2 months: you can try prune juice 1oz 2-3 times a day. If using baby prune juice, no dilution is necessary. If regular prune juice is used, it should be diluted before giving. If your baby is over 4 months, add baby foods with a high fiber content such as apricots, prunes, plums, peaches, pears, beans, peas, or spinach. Stay away from rice cereal and use barley or oatmeal instead.

For children older than 1 year of age: make sure your child is eating plenty of fruits or vegetables. Raw, unpeeled fruits and vegetables are the best. Increase the whole grains in your child's diet. Popcorn can be one of the best high fiber foods for children over 4 years of age.

Have your child sit on the toilet at regular intervals during the day; after a meal usually works out the best.
If you are finding these measures are not helping your child, please contact our office for further evaluation.
