COUGHS
Most coughs are caused by a viral infection either in the upper airways or lower airways. Because it is usually viral, antibiotics do not make the cough go away any quicker. A viral cough can last up to 2 weeks. Symptomatic treatment is the best care for coughs.

A cool mist vaporizer in the bedroom at night does wonders for relieving symptoms. If the cough is disrupting sleep, Delsym cough suppressant may be used for children over 6 months of age.

Fluid intake should be increased to help keep secretions thin and draining. Warm fluids (such as tea or warmed apple juice) will help soothe coughing spasms.

We would need to further evaluate your child if the following conditions exist:
-The child is having any signs of respiratory distress
-The cough lasts longer than 2-3 weeks
-Your child develops a fever well into the illness
-Your child becomes worse
