DIAPER RASH
Almost every child will experience diaper rash at one time or another. Diaper
rash is any rash on the skin that is covered by a diaper. This rash is caused
by prolonged exposure to urine and/or stool. There are many steps that can be
taken to help prevent diaper rash and also to help it once it starts.
- Make sure you are changing your child's diaper frequently especially during
periods of diarrhea. Neither cloth nor disposable diapers have been shown to
prevent diaper rash.
-Stop using baby wipes. These can be irritating to the skin. Use plain warm
water and a washcloth.
-Air is a great help for diaper rashes. After cleaning your baby, allow the
skin to air dry.
-Use a diaper cream such as Balmex, Desitin or A&D ointment. This provides
a barrier between the skin and the urine or stool.
If the diaper rash lasts longer than 3 days, contact our office for further
instructions.
Also contact our office if the diaper rash begins bleeding or weeping, the baby
has a fever, or the rash is spreading beyond the diaper area.
