
HAND-FOOT-and-MOUTH DISEASE or COXSACKIE VIRUS
Hand-foot-and-mouth disease is a contagious viral illness. Symptoms may last
7 to 10 days. This virus occurs mainly in children 6 months to 4 years of age.
The incubation period is 3 to 6 days after contact with an infected child.
The main symptoms are as follows:
- Small painful ulcers in mouth.
- Small water blisters on the palms of hands and soles of feet.
- Sometimes blisters appear on buttocks.
- Fever may be present for the first few days.
Treatment is directed at symptom relief and includes:
- Tylenol or Motrin/Advil for fever.
- Cool fluids and Popsicles.
- Solution of 1 tsp. Benadryl and 1 tsp. Kaopectate swabbed on visible mouth
lesions 4 times daily.
Children may get Hand-Foot- and-Mouth several times due to multiple strains of the virus.
