
MENSTRUAL CRAMPS (DYSMENORRHEA)
Lower mid abdominal cramps and/or back pain during a menstrual period
Cause:
- Strong contractions of uterine muscles as the uterus tries to expel blood.
Homecare:
- Ibuprofen 4x a day, see dosing chart
- Local heat / bath
- Keep active
- Get adequate sleep & adequate nutrition including iron.
Call if:
- Child is missing school / activities
- Pain >3 days
- Pain is severe and Ibuprofen doesn’t provide adequate relief
- Fever occurs or child acts more sick especially if vomiting or diarrhea
